Artist and collector Candice Groot earned her MFA in ceramics and sculpture from Texas Tech University, after which she taught at Gustavus Adolphus College. While in Minnesota she founded the Virginia A. Groot Foundation, an organization that annually awards three grants to artists working in 3D so they may devote more resources to their craft. Candice lived and worked in Chicago, using whiteware, decals, and found objects in her art as well as directing the Foundation. She made it out to the LH once during her – too short! – years as a Board Member, making fast friends with our furry four legged LH mascots and relishing the true quietness of our night-time and crisp, sweet Mountain air. The LH is proud to continue Candice’s legacy, collaborating with her Foundation to invite selected Groot Grant winners for short term residencies.
From all of us at the LH Project – we are so honored to have had you as a Board Member, dear Candice. Thank you for your service – your knowledge and insightful depth of curatorial ceramics indeed gave us and will keep giving us the opportunity to bring many talented ceramic artists to the LH and further their respected careers world wide. Most of all, your wonderful albeit whakky gifts and funny stories will be remembered and laughed about for many years to come. Especially the mongolian water buffalo? Cloven-hoofed ashtrays!
Peace be unto you. we will miss you greatly.
